Telegram and L2/L3s are the big trends from Game7’s State of Web3 Gaming report

A year on from its previous annual report, Game7 has released another comprehensive tome on the State of Web3 Gaming, although with the caveat that its data capture ended 30th September 2024, so effectively this is a report about 3/4 of 2024!

Some of the headlines are already well known.

  • Telegram and TON have been the big winners in terms of being the place where many blockchain games launch.
  • Similarly – and as it never tires of telling us – Immutable saw the most growth in terms of game migrating from other blockchains, notably from Polygon. Arbitrum and Avalanche also experienced inflows.
  • Finally, while Steam continues to block blockchain features, Epic Games Store has been a popular platform for the distribution of such games, even if we haven’t yet seen any breakout hits from its differentiation yet.

However, as an organisation which runs its own Mantle L2 blockchain, where Game7 has surfaced more interesting information is by looking at the wider state of infrastructure.

It notes that 2022 and 2023’s trends to the announcement and launch of more L2 and L3 blockchain has accelerated during 2024, especially in terms of specific gaming L3s such as Xai, Proof of Play’s Apex and Boss chains, Treasurechain, B3, Aavegotchi’s Geist etc etc.

Of course, the vast majority of these chains are Ethereum-compatible, with EVM chains accounting for around 70% of such infrastructure.
