Who were the blockchain gaming winners of 2024?

Before we wrap up 2024 and light the fireworks in celebration of a new beginning, let’s take a final look at some of the projects performing particularly well this year.

Continuing to work for their vision of decentralized tech in gaming and other areas of entertainment, these projects deserve a particular mention for their tenacity to stay focused and build through both bear and bull markets.

Blockchain game of the year: Pirate Nation

Holding fast to its vision of a deep gaming ecosystem deployed fully onchain, US dev Proof of Play sparked headlines when raising $33 million for social RPG Pirate Nation in the middle of 2023’s bear market. Much of 2024 has revolved around gradually rolling out the game and experimenting with its onchain economy.

Due to its quick growth, on a more technical plane it became apparent that the game’s infrastructure needed a scaling solution beyond its existing Apex chain. So, Proof of Play built that too, in the form of Boss chain.

As a result, Proof of Play now runs two of the top EVM gaming blockchains by throughput, with over 350 million transactions combined. This also means Pirate Nation now operates across multiple chains.

In terms of gameplay, various features have advanced and expanded with each season rolled out this year. A new points system and collaborative elements have been introduced, and most significantly, the developer has launched the PIRATE token, which has enabled staking, reward multipliers, and more.

Solidifying the community’s strength and support for this vision, after introducing the PIRATE staking program, an impressive 71% of tokens were invested back into the Proof of Play ecosystem.

Web3 gaming project of the year: Pudgy Penguins

Almost symbolically after a year of poor NFT trading volume, Pudgy Penguins recently surpassed Bored Apes Yacht Club to become the second most valuable NFT collection by market cap. Only days prior, Pudgy Penguins’ parent company Igloo announced the forthcoming launch of the PENGU token. Already one of the top 100 crypto, PENGU will serve as the token for its growing ecosystem of cross-cultural experiences, including NFT collections, physical toys, and games. As such, PENGU is likely to reinvigorate the IP’s OG followers as well as attract newcomers in 2025.

Collaborating with one of the most experienced web3 game developers in the sector, Mythical Games, on social mobile game Pudgy Party, which is set for launch in the summer of 2025, is only likely to keep this momentum increasing.

And talking of Mythical, here’s another contender with a great line-up for 2025, with NFL Rivals continuing its top performance in terms of NFT trading volume and active players, and its FIFA licensed sister game FIFA Rivals launching in the summer. For the more OG community, Blankos Mobile forthcoming launch is less anticipated.

Gaming blockchain of the year: TON

Looking back, the remarkable growth of Telegram mini-games has been one of the dominating and unpredicted forces this past year, accompanied by the virality of associated games such as Notcoin and Hamster Kombat. According to Animoca Brands’ report on the TON ecosystem, there are now over 34 million active wallets on TON.

Yet some would argue that it’s not the strength of those games in themselves that’s mainly been attracting players, but rather their accessibility and seamless user experience. Emphasising this trend, in July Animoca co-founder and chairman Yat Siu said he predicted 100 million new web3 users will come from gaming on platforms such as Telegram. The platform has now grown to over 950 million users.

Beyond the rapid pace at which new simple clicker games are deploying on TON, the network has also grown in credibility due to multiple game developers using the network to funnel players to their deeper experiences elsewhere.

  • Delabs Games announced it’s halting the development of existing projects to make a full pivot towards distributing mid-core games such as Boxing Star and Ragnarok IP idle RPG via Telegram.
  • Mighty Bear Games unveiled its skill-based rewards platform Goat Gaming.
  • Immutable integrated support for Telegram mini-games via its wallet solution.#
  • Ronin-based Tatsumeeko launched Telegram mini-game Lumina Hunt. Interestingly, this doesn’t leverage the TON network, which further enhances the role of Telegram as a general games distribution platform for web3 game developers.
